Our sculpture and hand-building classes are for adults of all skill levels.

Hand building students might build a plate, bowl, mug or vase using slabs, molds, pinching coils and extrusions. We will modify surfaces using lace, stamps. found objects, carving, sgraffito and stencils. Experienced hand building students can still enroll at their preferred time and day, regardless of whether or not the class is a beginning course. They will be giving guidance to develop their skills and techniques in hand building methods.

Advanced Hand Building and Sculpture students needed to have completed at least one, 6-week hand building class prior to their class. Students will be challenged to create self-portraits, sculptures of animals, build lamps or water fountains. The possibilities are endless and lead by student interests and ideas.

Level:  Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced

Cost: $150 - $300

Time: 3-Week classes meet for three weeks and six weeks meet for six weeks. Both are 3 hours each, (two-hours guided instruction, one-hour individual practice).  Please note:  The Guild will be closed Saturday, May 28th through Monday, May 30th for Memorial Day Weekend.  Classes scheduled to meet on Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays will resume the following week.  See the schedule posted below for open studio hours, holiday closures and class times.

Requirements:  Students must be at least 16 years-old.  Min/Max Enrollment: 4/8 students

Description: This class is for individuals of all clay skill level: from beginner – to advanced. 

Hand building students will learn various methods of construction, decoration, vocabulary, as well as sculptural techniques.

Projects will be introduced to the class to demonstrate techniques, but students can choose whether or not to do the class project or follow their own creative path.  Students will be introduced to:

  • Slab building

  • Coiling

  • Pinch Method

  • Scraffito and other surface decoration methods

What do I need to bring?  Bring an apron, an old towel for cleaning your hands, clay tools, a sketch book, and your sense of humor.

What is provided?  Students may bring their own tools or purchase tools at the Clawson Clay Guild.  Each student will also receive 25 pounds of clay, weekly instruction, firing, glazing, and access to open studio for the duration of the six-week class.  If a student uses all 25-pounds of clay, additional clay may be purchased.  All students have access to CCG Open Studio for the duration of the class.  

What is Open Studio? 

Open studio hours are designated times when students (not the general public) can access the studio to work on projects.  During open studio hours, currently enrolled CCG students can:

  • Hone their pottery skills on the pottery wheel

  • Use wheels, handbuilding tools, wheel-throwing tools and other CCG resources (slab roller, extruders, tile cutters, glazes, slab and hump molds) for their artistic endeavors

  • Peruse a growing library of art books, pottery books and magazines

  • Glaze their pottery pieces with underglazes, brushing glazes, and dipping glazes

  • Engage with a community of aspiring and established potters about all things pottery

WHEN is Open Studio?

Open Studio is available six days a week.  We try to ensure that wheels are readily available to students, Please plan your studio use in advance when possible. Students may reserve wheels in-person on our studio sign-up sheet.   Online wheel reservations are coming soon!

Open Studio Hours:

  • Tuesdays: 5pm-10pm

  • Wednesdays: 12pm-10pm

  • Thursdays: 12pm-10pm

  • Fridays: 12pm-10pm

  • Saturdays: 12pm-5pm

  • Sundays: 12pm-5pm

Terms and Conditions: Cancellations requested at least one week prior to the start of class will be refunded but incur a $15 cancellation fee per person. Cancellations later than 1 week before the class start date will be issued a 50% refund. There are no refunds issued for cancellations occurring after the start date.
